Because there are 6 numbers in total, including the variable,so,

7+4+8+10+12= 41

8x6= 48

48-41= 7

a=7

Step-by-step explanation:

mean  =   \binom{sum \: of \: all \: numbers}{total \: numbers}  \:  \\ mean =  \:  \binom{4 + 7 + a + 8 + 10 + 12}{6}  \\ mean \:  =  \:  \binom{41 + a}{6} \\ mean \:  =  \binom{8}{1}  \\ a  = 7
