If a≠0 and a-1/a =3 find a^2+1/ a^2

a-1/a=3

Squaring on both sides

(a-1/a)²=3²

a²+1/a²-2=9 => (a-b)²=a²+b²-2ab

a²+1/a²=9+2

a²+1/a²=11
