Using the identity (x^3-y^3)=x^3- y^3 -3xy (x-y)

{a-(1/a)}^3 = a^3 -(1/a)^3 - 3 x a x 1/a (a-1/a)

a^3 -(1/a)^3 -3(3)

a^3 -(1/a)^3= 9
