If a 1m pendulum has a time period of 2s , what should be the length of a pendulum of time period 4s ...
solution : we know, time period of simple pendulum, T = 2π√(l/g), where l is length of pendulum, g is acceleration due to gravity and T is time period.
case 1 : l = 1m, T = 2s
so, time period, 2s = 2π√(1/g).....(1)
case2 : time period, T' = 4s
so, T' = 4s = 2π√(l'/g) .....(2)
from equations (1) and (2),
T/T' = 2s/4s = √(1/l')
or, 1/2 = √(1/l')
or, 1/4 = 1/l'
or, l' = 4m
hence, length of the pendulum must be 4m.
