Hope u like my process..
_______________________
a² - 3a + 1 =0

Dividing both sides by a
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

or, (a² - 3a +1)/a = 0/a

or, a²/a - 3a/a +1/a =0

or, a +1/a - 3 =0

or a + 1/a =3
