Step-by-step explanation:

a=1+b

(1+b)^2+b^2=41

1+2b+b^2+b^2=41

2b^2+2b+1=41

2b^2+2b-40=0

divide by 2

b^2+b-20=0

b^2+5b-4b-20=0

b(b+5)-4(b+5)=0

b+5=0 b-4=0

therefore b=-5 and4

subs values of b

a=-4 and5
