If a + b = 5 and a - b = √17 then the value of ab should be ..

solution : (a + b) = 5 and (a - b) = √17

(a + b)² = 5²

⇒a² + b² + 2ab = 25 ....(1)

(a - b)² = √17²

⇒a² + b² - 2ab = 17 ....(2)

subtracting equation (2) from (1) we get,

4ab = 25 - 17 = 8

⇒ab = 2

Therefore the value of ab should be 2.
