Given

  • a+b=6
  • ab=20

To find

  • a-b

Solution

To find a-b, first we will have to find a²+b²

(a+b)²=a²+b²+2ab

Substituting the values we get,

→ 6²=a²+b²+2×20

→ 36=a²+b²+40

→ 36-40 = a²+b²

→ a²+b²= -4

Now we will find a-b

We know that,

(a-b)²=a²+b²-2ab

Substituting the values, we get,

(a-b)²= -4 - 2 × 20

(a-b)² = -4 × -40

(a-b)² = 160

a-b = ±√160

a - b = 40

Therefore, the value of a - b is 40
