if a body is moving with constant speed along a straight line then in order to change the direction of motion an external force had to be applied in a direction normal to the direction of motion . Is this statement true or false and why?

the above state is based on newton's first law of motion ......according to it an object move continuous along a straight lie until an external unbalance force act to it ...therefore the above statement is TRUE
