Let say velocity of object  =  2v  cm/s  at beginning

then after penetrating 3 cm

velocity will be 2v  - (2v/2)  = v     cm/s

Distance Covered = 3 cm

Applying  V² - U² = 2aS

=> v² - (2v)² = 2a(3)

=> -3v² = 6a

=> a  = - v²/2

At rest velocity  = 0

to find distance covered after 3 sec

=> 0² - v²  = 2( - v²/2) S

=> S = 1

Hence  1 cm more will be covered

Body will penetrate 1 cm more in wooden block before coming to rest
