If a bullet is fired from a gun.We can can calculate the recoil velocity by two ways1) momentum of bullet = momentum of gun2)total momentum before firing = total momentum after firing.Can anyone explain me these two methods as the answer is +ve in 1) case and-ve in 2) case

It is +ve in 1 case as in that the momentum of gun and bullet is of before firing
In 2 case the momentum of gun will be in negative as the gun recoils
