We know that the chemical name of vinegar is ethanoic acid which is also called acetic acid.

Chemical formula of ethanoic acid (or vinegar ) is  CH_{3}COOH .

So,when it reacts with any salt, the colourless gas called carbon dioxide ( CO_{2} ) is evolved.

Example :

Let's suppose that salt is sodium bicarbonate ( NaHCO_{3} )

CH_{3}COOH    +  NaHCO _{3}

                                       ⇒ CH _{3}COONa + H _{2}O + CO_{2}
