ANSWER:

(a)  Is the concentration of salt is lesser than that of the concentration inside the cell then the cell swells up by taking large quantities of water, it also has possibilities to swell and burst. If the cell is present in a solution containing higher salt that that of the cell then the cell shrinks and dies.  

(b)  The process that makes the above condition is termed as the osmosis, the solvent from the lower concentrated medium will flow to the higher concentrated medium thereby equalising the concentration across both the membranes.
