if a man stands on a chair his full body weight is applied to the chair so the chances of breaking are high but when he sits his half body weight mainly from the waist is applied so the chance of breaking is less than that one

the surface area of feet is less and hence whole body weight is pushed only at one point, resulting in breaking of the chair while standing
