If a object travels at a speed of 11.2m/s it will escape from the earth. Why?

To leave the earth, an object go to be faster than the speed of gravity- which pulls it downward. So, when an object is moving upwards with a speed of 11.2 m/s, then it overcomes the pull of -9.2 m/s (i.e in downward direction) and escapes the earth!
