if a person step down from a moving vehicle his should run few steps in the direction of motion why

There is this effect called inertia of motion acting on you which means as long as you're in contact with the vehicle, you will move with it but as soon as you jump off you lose contact so you slow down. Hence, people tend to run a bit as they jump off in order to gradually come to a stop as opposed to jumping off directly, facing the opposite direction of motion in which case the chances of losing your balance are very high.
