If the magnesium is put in a Acid it will release hydrogen gas

Suppose that we put a piece of magnesium into a solution of HCl then the following reactio will take place---

Mg(s) + HCl(aq) -------> MgCl2 (aq) + H2(g)

Hydrogen gas has been evolved in yhe above reaction because of the rule that..

Metal + Acid--------> Salt+ Hydrogen gas
