If a polynomial p(x) is divided by (x - a) then the reminder will be 'p(a)'.
Let me prove it.
Let p(x) = (x - a) q(x) + r
where p(x) and (x - a) are dividend and divisor respectively, as given in the question, and q(x) and r are quotient and remainder thus obtained respectively.
As this equality holds true, it is applicable for all values of x, even x = a too.
So let me take x = a.
Then the equation will be,
p(a) = (a - a) q(a) + r
⇒ p(a) = r
This means that p(a) will be the remainder.
Hence proved!

Hope this helps you. ^_^
