If a soil ‘X’ has 20% water holding capacity. Sam poured
water from measuring cylinder having 200 ml water on 50g
of soil sample ‘Y’ till dripping. Water left in cylinder is
180ml.
a) Calculate percentage of water retained by soil sample
‘Y’.
b) Which soil sample can be used to grow paddy.

a. 10%.

Explanation:

Water in cylinder = 200ml

Left volume of water = 180ml

Used volume of water = 200 - 180 = 20ml

Let the percentage of water retained be x.

Hence, x equals;

x% × 200 = 20;

x/100 × 200 =20

x = 10%.

Soil sample X can be used to grow paddy since paddy requires large volume of water.
