given , ab = 35

a^2 + b^2 = 74

a^2 + b^2 + 2a b - 2a b = 74

( a + b )^2 - 2 a b = 74 _________eq.(1)

now put value of ' ab ' here in eq. (1), we get

( a + b )^2 - 2 ( 35 ) = 74

( a + b )^2 - 70 = 74

( a + b )^2 = 74 + 70

( a + b )^2 = 144

a + b = √144

a + b = 12

therefore value of ( a + b ) = 12
