The compass will starts showing deflection in north-south directions. This is so because when the electricity is passed the wire acts as a magnet and due to magnetic effect of electricity the compass needled get deflected in north-south positions.

The compass will start reading north direction towards the place the current is flowing which means it will start showing north-south deflections. This occurs due to the magnetic effect of current i.e, the current passing through the wire creates a magnetic field around it.. This experiment is also known as Oersted's experiment.
