6

Correct Question :-

If a² - 6a - 1 = 0, find the value of a² + 1/a².

Answer :-

a² + 1/a² = 38

Solution :-

First find the value of a - 1/a

a² - 6a - 1 = 0

⇒ a² - 6a = 1

⇒ a(a - 6) = 1

⇒ a - 6 = 1/a

⇒ a - 6 - 1/a = 0

⇒ a - 1/a = 6

Therefore a - 1/a = 6

There is an identity to find a + 1/a when a - 1/a is known to us

i.e, (a + 1/a)² - (a - 1/a)² = 4

Here a - 1/a = 6

By substituting the values

⇒ (a + 1/a)² - (6)² = 4

⇒ (a + 1/a)² - 36 = 4

⇒ (a + 1/a)² = 4 + 36

⇒ (a + 1/a)² = 40

⇒ a + 1/a = √40

⇒ a + 1/a = √4(√10)

⇒ a + 1/a = 2(√10)

⇒ a + 1/a = 2√10

Squaring on both the sides

⇒ (a + 1/a)² = (2√10)²

⇒ (a)² + (1/a)² + 2(a)(1/a) = 2²(√10)²

[Since (a + b)² = a² + b² + 2ab]

⇒ a² + 1²/a² + 2 = 4(10)

⇒ a² + 1/a² + 2 = 40

⇒ a² + 1/a² = 40 - 2

⇒ a² + 1/a² = 38

Therefore the value of a² + 1/a² = 38

Identities used :-

• (a + 1/a)² - (a - 1/a)² = 4

• (a + b)² = a² + b² + 2ab
