To Find : AD

Solution:

If two secant segments are drawn to a circle from an exterior point,

the product of the measures of one secant segment and its external secant segment = the product of the measures of the other secant segment and its external secant segment.

Hence

AB * AC = AD * AE  

AB = 4.2

AC = AB + BC = 4.2 + 5.4 = 9.6

AD = ?

AE = 12

=> 4.2 * 9.6  = AD * 12

=> 4.2 * 0.8  = AD

=> 3.36 = AD

=> AD = 3.36
