p(x) = $x^{2}$ - 5x + α
Here, a = 1, b = -5 and c = α

Let α and β be the zeroes of p(x)

Now,

 α + β = - b / a
          = - (-5) / 1
          = 5
 
αβ   = c / a
αβ   = α / 1
αβ   = α 
β     = a / a
β     = 1 ------------------------- (1)    


Now, 

α - β = 1 

and, from 1 

α - 1 = 1
So,

α = 1 + 1
α = 2


So, α = 2
