Given polynomial : 6x²-7x-3
To find : a²+b² .... where a=alpha and b=beta

a²+b²= (a+b)²- 2ab ....... As (a+b)² = a²+b²+2ab

we know ,
a+b= 7/6
and
ab= -3/6 = -1/2

therefore ,
a²+b²= (7/6)²-2× -1/2
=> 49/36 + 1
=> 85/36

hope you will understand it...
