p(x)=4x^2-5x-1

 \alpha + \beta = - b \div a = - ( - 5) \div 4 = 5 \div 4

 \alpha \beta = c \div a = - 1 \div 4

{\alpha }^{2} + { \beta }^{2} = \alpha + \beta - 2 \alpha \beta

=5/4+1/2

=7/4
