60% passed in English = 0.6x
75% passed in Maths = 0.75x
20% failed in both = 0.2x
passed in both = 2500
so, total =
0.6x + 0.75x + 0.2x - 2500 = x
1.55x - x = 2500
0.55x = 2500
x = 4545.4545
so approximately 4545 students appeared for exam
