Define x:

Let Bansi be x years old

Express his age 5 years ago in term of x:

Bansi = x - 5

Add his present age to 4x his age 5 years ago

Bansi = 4(x - 5) + x

Bansi = 4x - 20 + x

Bansi = 5x - 20

Solve x:

It will exceed 3 times his present age by 16

(5x - 20) - 3x = 16

5x - 20 - 3x = 16

2x - 20 = 16

2x = 36

x = 18 years old

Answer: Bansi is 18 years old

18 years

Step-by-step explanation:

Solution,

Let Bansi age be x years

It is said 5 years ago so

Bansi= x-5

If bansi adds his present age to 4 times his s age 5 years ago then,

Bansi= 4(x-5)+x

= 4x-20+x(MULTIPLYING

BOTH SIDES

BY 4

= 4x+x-20

= 5x-20

If it exceeds 3 times his present age by 16 years then, (SOLVING FOR X)

(5x-20) -3x=16

5x-20-3x=16

5x-3x=+20+16

(GROUPING LIKE TERMS AND CHANGE OF SIGN -TO +)

2x=36

(DIVIDING 36 BY 2 AND WE GOT 18)

x=36

2

x=18
