First and foremost, we have to remember that Britain never arrived in India with the idea of conquering most of the territories and ruled it, directly and indirectly. They just arrived here for trade. The Mughal rule in India under Jehangir was quite powerful and Britain wasn't as strong. They had just fought a Civil war and the monarchy in Britain had returned. Mughal rule weakened after Aurangazeb and the local rulers fought one another - Marathas against the Mughals, some regional rulers becoming stronger than the Mughal rule etc. This made the trade activities chaotic. Some local rulers were interested in using the army of the East India company in their local disputes. The British just made use of the disputes and gained. It was the story of the Monkey and the cats over a piece of cake or cheese.
The British East India company had advantage in their weapons, techniques and above all a good military organization. They were never strong enough to fight a conventional war and win in a straight fight with just the British soldiers against any local leader because they didn't have the adequate number of soldiers. But when the local ruler fought the other alongside the British saw opportunities and made the best of it. The political power was even more attractive than the trade and they grabbed it with both hands. When the British defeated Siraj-ud-Daula, they got a huge amount of money as well. It was a great motivation for the British soldiers and generals.
In India, not just were the local rulers divided among themselves, but also the social conditions weren't great. As the largest Indian empire, the Mughals had weakened and the society's evils were quite bad. We know of the Sati system where the widows were forcibly pushed into her husband's pyre.
