When the British left India, the nation was a burning mess. There were riots everywhere in the last years of the Raj and the administration proved thoroughly incapable of ruling India. Since agriculture was ignored for the most part, there were massive famines throughout the British rule. One of the most brutal ones was in the last couple of years of the Raj - Bengal famine of 1943. Industries were no better - very few major industries existed in India making the middle class go nearly extinct.
