shifting one term of the equation from left to right
$\cos( \alpha ) = 1 - { \cos^{2} ( \alpha ) }$
now, squaring both sides
$cos ^{2} ( \alpha ) = (sin^{2})^{2} ( \alpha )$
$1 - { \sin^{2} ( \alpha ) } = \sin ^{4} ( { \alpha })$
