 \cos( \alpha )  +  \ {\cos ^{2} ( \alpha ) } = 1
shifting one term of the equation from left to right
 \cos( \alpha  )  = 1 -  { \cos^{2} ( \alpha ) }
now, squaring both sides
cos ^{2} ( \alpha ) = (sin^{2})^{2}  ( \alpha )
1 -  { \sin^{2} ( \alpha ) } =   \sin ^{4} ( { \alpha })
now shift second term from left to right.
  sin^{4} ( \alpha ) +  sin^{2} ( \alpha ) = 1
