We don't know. The principles of conservation of energy and matter apply to the universe as we know it. At the zero point of time, with matter (seemingly) condensed into an infinitely dense point, the laws of nature as we understand them don't apply.
It is human nature to look for causes. But as Newton discovered with thermodynamics, and others with quantum mechanics, sometimes there are no causes, only random chance. Maybe the universe came into existence because its number was up.
