Topic - Finding Animals

Given:

  • 1 Rs. --- 1 horse
  • 1 Rs. --- 8 camels
  • 10 Rs. --- 1 elephant

To find: the number of animals in such a way that sum of the number of animals be 100 and the total price be Rs. 100

Solution:

Let,

  • Number of horses = x
  • Number of elephants = y
  • Number of camels = 100 - x - y

Then, we can form an equation for total price:

  • x + 10y + (100 - x - y)/8 = 100
  • or, 8x + 80y + 100 - x - y = 800
  • or, 7x + 79y = 700

We have found one equation with two unknown variables and thus we cannot solve it with a direct method.

We use trial and error to find integral values of x and y:

x y
