Given: For a transistor, beta =49.

To find: The value of alpha.

Solution: The value of alpha is 49/50.

The formula of alpha and beta can be written as shown below.

\alpha = \frac{I_{C}}{I_{E}}

\beta = \frac{I_{C}}{I_{B}}

Here, I_{C} is the current in the collector, I_{E} is the current in the emitter and I_{B} is the current in the base of the transistor. Now, in a transistor, the following equation is true.

I_{E} = I_{C} + I_{B}

Dividing both sides with I_{C}.

\frac{I_{E}}{I_{C}}  = \frac{I_{C} }{I_{C}} + \frac{ I_{B}}{I_{C}}

\frac{1}{\alpha } = 1 + \frac{1}{\beta }

Thus, the value of beta can be substituted and the value of alpha can be found.

\frac{1}{\alpha } = 1 + \frac{1}{49 }

\alpha = \frac{49}{50}

Therefore, the value of alpha is 49/50.
