Lime water turns milky when you pass carbon dioxide through it because a reaction that produces a white precipitate takes place. ... Calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2, is sparsely soluble in water (1.5 g/L at 25 °C[1]).

Answer:

The lime water will not turn milky.

Explanation:

Lime water turns milky when insoluble Calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) is formed on passing carbon dioxide through it.

Equation:  Ca(OH)₂ + CO₂ → CaCO₃ +H₂O

In this case no carbon dioxide dissolves in lime water the reasons are as follows:

  • The green plant is placed in sunlight and hence photosynthesis is taking place. Photosynthesis uses carbon dioxide as raw material and hence the volume of CO₂ present in the trapped air is used up and O₂ is produced.
  • Secondly, the respiration taking place in plant cell produces CO₂ but it  will be taken up for photosynthesis.
  • Since the bell jar is air tight the supply of external air is cut and at a point of time the volume of carbon dioxide and oxygen will become negligible and process of photosynthesis as well as respiration will cease.
