Hypotenuse =20. Side 1 = x. Side 2 = y

According to Pythagoras theorem,

(20)2 = (x)2 + (y)2

400=x2 + y2. --1

Now the difference between the sides is 4

That is....x-y=4

x-y=4

x=4+y. ----2

Putting 2 in 1 , we get

400 = (4+y)2 + ( y)2

400=16 +8y +y2+y2

400=16+8y+2 y2

400-16=8y + 2 y2

384=2y2+8y

0=y2+4y-192

0=y2 + 16y -12y -192

0=y(y+16)-12(y+16)

0=(y+16) (y-12)

Y=12cm

X=4+12=16cm
