If nails and hair are dead cells, than how do they grow?

Nails and hair are made up of a tough protective protein called keratin. Hair grows in a hair follicle whereas nails grow from the matrix (the base of the nail bed). They die and harden, thus turning into hair or nails. This process is called keratinisation which makes your hair and nails grow.
