If no. of neutron and proton are conserved during nuclear reaction. how energy is released or absorb in a nuclear reaction?

The total rest mass of protons and neutron sis same on the two sides of the nuclear reaction as their number is conserved. But the total binding energy of the nuclei on the two sides need not be equal. the difference in these energies appears as the energy released or absorbed.
