if oxygen is necessary for combustion then how does sun keeps burning without oxygen in the outer space?​

So, the Sun can "burn" hydrogen to helium without the need for oxygen. ... Even in these stars, however, an absence of oxygen does not prevent nuclear burning.

That was the great question that vexed scientists even into the 20th century. Where was the oxygen? Then again, they calculated the mass of the sun and its energy output which led them to the conclusion that the sun ran out of energy a long time ago. Even if it started now, in a few hours the fire would be out. What was going on?
