a = 1 and b = -3

•As point P divides AB in 3:1 .

By Section formula

•x = (m2X1 - m1X2)/(m1+m2)

•9a-2 = {1(3a+1) + 3(8)}/4

•36a-8 = 3a + 1 +24

•33a = 33

•a = 1

•y = (m2Y1 + m1Y2)/(m1+m2)

•-b = {1(-3)+3(5)}/4

•-4b = -3 +15

•b = 12//(-4)

•b = -3
