Given :- P varies as Q and P = 4 when Q = 6 .

To Find :- The value of Q when P = 32 ?

Concept used :-

  • when A varies as B we have, A = K•B, where K is constant .

Solution :-

since P varies as Q,

→ P ∝ Q

→ P = K•Q { where k is constant }

given that when P is 4 , Q is 6 .

So,

→ 4 = K × 6

→ K = 4/6

→ K = 2/3

therefore, when P is 32,

→ P = K•Q

→ 32 = (2/3) × Q

→ 32 × (3/2) = Q

→ Q = 16 × 3

→ Q = 48 (Ans.)

Additional information :-

P varies inversely as Q :-

→ P ∝ 1/Q

→ P = K•(1/Q) { where k is constant }

given that when P is 4 , Q is 6 .

So,

→ P × Q = K

→ 4 × 6 = K

→ K = 24

therefore, when P is 32,

→ P = K•(1/Q)

→ 32 = 24 × (1/Q)

→ Q = (24/32)

→ Q = (3/4) (Ans.)
