Given:

p( x) = x {}^{2} + 2x - 5

To find

p(-1)

p( -1) = ( - 1) {}^{2} + 2( - 1) - 5 \\ = 1 - 2 - 5 \\ = - 1 - 5

Answer:

p(-1) = (-1)^2 + 2(-1) - 5

= 1 + (-2) -5

= 1 - 7

= -6

so, p(-1) is -6
