If pq=6 and p+q=5, then p^2+q^2=? *​

Answer:

p = 2

q = 3

pq = 2*3 = 6

p + q = 5

2 + 3 = 5

p^2 + q^2

2^2 + 3^2

4 + 9 = 13

given pq = 6 ---------(1)

and p + q = 5 -------(2)

squaring on both sides of eq(2)

=>( p + q)^2 = 25

[ (a+b)^2 = a^2 + b^2 + 2ab ]

=> p^2 + q^2 + 2pq = 25

=> p^2 + q^2 + 2(6) = 25 [∵ from eq(1) ]

=> p^2 + q^2 + 12 = 25

=> p^2 + q^2 = 25 - 12

∴ p^2 + q^2 = 13
