Let the first term of the A.P be a and it progressing with common difference d.

Here is an AP

a, a+d, a+2d ........

S2 denotes the sum of first two terms i.e a and a+d = a + a + d = 2a + d

S1 denotes the sum of first term = a

S2 - S1 = 2a + d - a

           = a + d (second term)

S2 - S1 of any A.P gives the second term of the A.P as answer.
