Answer:

first number is 13 and the second number is 8

Step-by-step explanation:

x+y=21-------(1)

x-y=5------(2)

x-y=5

x=5+y--------(3)

substitute (3) in (1)

x+y=21

5+y+y=21

5+2y=21

2y=21-5

2y=21-5

2y=16

y=8

substitute y=8 in (2)

x-y=5

x-8=5

x=5+8

x=13

hope this helps you

The numbers are 13 and 8 .

Let x and y denote the two numbers.

It is given that sum of two numbers is 21.

i.e., x + y = 21

Also , difference between them is 5 .

i.e., x - y = 5

adding both equations ,

x + y + x - y = 21 + 5

gives , 2x = 26

            x = 13

substituting into x + y = 21 gives , 13 + y = 21

i.e., y = 21 - 13 = 8 .

therefore , the two numbers are 13 and 8 .
