Let tan Ф = x
Therefore
x + 1/x = 2
Squaring on both sides
(x + 1/x)² = 2²
We know that (x + 1/x)² = x² + 1/x² + 2
So
x² + 1/x² + 2 = 4
x² + 1/x² = 4 - 2
x² + 1/x² = 2
Subsituting x = tan Ф
