All soils contain mineral particles, organic matter, water and air. The combinations of these determine the soil’s properties – its texture, structure, porosity, chemistry and colour.

If the amount of large and fine particles is about the same, then the soil is called loamy. These soils are fertile, easy to work with and provide good drainage.  Due to their predominant composition they can be either sandy or clay loam.
