Answer :

No. of boys are 8 and no. of shirts are 12.

Solution :

Let, the number of boys and shirts be x and y.

If one boy wear one shirt, 4 shirts are left.

↪ x + 4 = y

↪ x = y - 4 -------- equation 1

If one boy wears 2 shirts, 2 boys are left shirtless i.e, more 4 shirts are needed.

↪ 2x = y + 4 ------- equation 2

Now, Subtract equation 1 from 2

2x = y + 4

x = y - 4 (-)

_____________

x = 8

_____________

Consider equation 2

↪ 2x = y + 4

↪ 2(8) = y + 4

↪ y = 12

Therefore,

No. of boys = x = 8

No. of Shirts = y = 12
