If the cerebellum is not functioning properly, activities of our body may get affected like,

  • Balance: Maintenance of body balance or equilibrium and posture.
  • Movements: Motor, voluntary, and coordinating movements.
  • Strength: Maintenance of muscle tone.
  • Sensory perception: of vision, speech.
  • Intellectual: Motor learning and cognitive functions.

The cerebellum receives signals or information from the spinal cord, sensory organs, and other parts of brain and regulates voluntary and motor movements, sensory perception, and learning activities. Ataxia is one type of disorder arising due to cerebellar dysfunction.

Symptoms due to cerebellar dysfunction may include:

  • Loss of muscle tone, coordination, control, and movements.
  • Lack of body posture, balance, and frequent falling
  • Difficulties with mobility
  • Blurry vision
  • Slurred speech
  • Abnormal eye movements
  • Lack of gross and fine motor activities and coordination
  • Lack of cognitive thinking.
