If the diameter AD of a circle is 34 cm and the length of a chord AB is 30 cm.
What is the distance of AB from the centre?

FINAL ANSWER:

the distance of AB from the centre is 8 cm

GIVEN:

AD = 34 cm

AX = BX = r = 17 cm

AB = 330 cm

AY = 15 cm

and

BY = 15 cm                   (look in figure)

CONSTRUCTION:

construct a perpendicular line XY from center X

TO FIND:

to find distance of AB from the center

FORMULA USED:

Pythagoras triplate

hypotenuse²=perpendicular²+base²

H²=P²+B²

SOLUTION:

in ΔAXY

AX²=XY²+AX²

17²=XY²+15²

289=XY²+225

XY²=289-225

XY²=64

XY=√64

XY= 8 cm

or

perpendicular =8cm
